In this program, students learn to evaluate the oral health of clients and to interpret clinical results. In collaboration with their client, students develop an individualized care plan. The students are responsible for delivering preventative, educational and therapeutic care within the dental hygienist’s scope of practice.
Students experience internal and external clinical experiences in various settings such as the Student Dental Hygiene Clinic, francophone community health centers, long term care settings and Public Health Sudbury & Districts. They also participate in an interprofessional activity in collaboration with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
The graduates of this program are prepared to practice confidently as part of an interprofessional health care team.
Graduates of the advanced diploma in Dental Hygiene must write the national certification examination required to practice in the profession. This national examination is offered by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (http://www.ndhcb.ca/). After successful completion, graduates are required to register with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (http://www.cdho.org) in order to practice in the province. The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation of Canada – CDAC (http://www.cda-adc.ca/cdacweb/en/)
